Retford FC Boss Holds Honest and Upbeat Q&A with Supporters

Retford FC Manager and Chairman Chris Woodhead opened the doors — and the dialogue — on Saturday afternoon as he faced a busy Sports Bar for an open Q&A session with supporters. The informal event drew a healthy turnout, with fans keen to hear first‑hand about preparations for the 2026/27 campaign both on and off the pitch.

Woodhead, joined by members of his coaching staff, fielded questions for over an hour, offering what many described as one of the most transparent and engaging sessions the club has hosted in recent years.

Progress on 3G Pitch and Ground Improvements

One of the first topics raised was the club’s ambitious plans for a new 3G facility at the Babworth Road ground. Woodhead confirmed that the project is moving steadily through the tendering stage.

“We’re in the thick of the tender process now,” he explained. “Everything is progressing well, and we’re confident we’re on the right track.”

Supporters also heard encouraging updates on further ground developments. A new stand is set to be installed at the Babworth Road end, adding 100 covered seats and improving the matchday experience for spectators.

In addition, plans are in place to extend the clubhouse balcony, incorporating a new club shop into the structure.

Woodhead also used the opportunity to highlight the ongoing need for volunteers.

“We’ve got a brilliant group already, but there’s always room for more,” he said. “If you’ve got a skill — any skill — come and speak to me. Keeping this place in top condition is a team effort.”

Pre‑Season Preparations Underway

Attention then turned to football matters, with pre‑season training set to begin next Tuesday. The squad will train three times a week in the build‑up to their opening friendly — an away trip to Rainworth Miners Welfare on Friday 3rd July.

Woodhead confirmed he is actively working to strengthen the squad. “We’re talking to a couple of new faces and hoping to add more as pre‑season goes on,” he said.

While disappointed to lose Jesse Omoregbee and Jacob Priestnall in close season, the manager expressed satisfaction at retaining the core of the side that lifted the UCL Division One title last season. New arrivals Bernard Nsiah and Alex Wonham are expected to slot straight into the group. “Keeping the spine of the team together was massive for us,” he added. “Bernard and Alex will fit right in — they’re the right characters as well as the right players.”

Matchday Initiatives and Fan Engagement

Supporters also raised ideas around improving the matchday experience. A range of initiatives were discussed, with both the club and the supporters’ club set to explore options to enhance engagement for fans and players alike.

The tone throughout the afternoon was positive, constructive, and forward‑looking — a reflection of the momentum building around the club as it prepares for life in the NCEL Premier Division.

A Club Moving Forward Together

As the session wrapped up, there was a sense of optimism. With infrastructure improvements progressing, pre‑season around the corner, and a manager committed to transparency and ambition, Retford FC heads into 2026/27 with confidence.

A very positive afternoon — and a clear sign that the Choughs are determined to keep growing on and off the pitch.
