Choughs boosted with ex-pro trio

The Retford FC line up for Saturday’s game against Manchester United XI has been boosted with three ex-pros agreeing to take part in the game.

Chris Woodhead with Dean Windass

Dean Windass will be pulling on his boots at the age of 55 as he will play in the second half alongside Retford’s Veterans side. Windass was the scorer of the only goal at Wembley Stadium when Hull City were promoted to the Premier League in 2008. He has played for Hull City, Bradford City, Middlesborough and Sheffield United among others with over 700 professional games under his belt. He more recently played for Scarborough Athletic and was manager of East Hull when they came to visit Retford FC in an NCEL game in 2019.

Joining Windass will be former Blackburn Rovers star Matt Jansen.

With a career starting at Carlisle United, he moved onto Crystal Palace then to Blackburn Rovers where he signed for £4.1 million in January 1999.  He achieved a league cup win and was in the PFA team of the year whilst at Rovers.

Recent years have seen the former England U21 International play for and manage Chorley FC.

The final addition will be ex Liverpool and Blackburn midfielder David Thompson. With 48 Premier League appearances for Liverpool in 1996-2000, Thompson moved onto Coventry City where he achieved. The Player and Fans Player of the Year awards and finished top goalscorer.

Blackburn Rovers was his next port of call where he was named in the England squad by Sven-Goran Eriksson before moving to Wigan Athletic and helping them to their highest ever Premier League finish.
